lass

lass
This would be the normal word for ‘girl’ in the north of England, extending down to the northern Midlands. It is the Scottish term as well, together with its diminutive form, ‘lassie’. When Mellors, the gamekeeper in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, by D.H.Lawrence, lapses into dialect to address his lover he calls her ‘ma lass - ma little lass’. In The House with the Green Shutters, by George Douglas. which is set in a Scottish town, a husband calls his wife ‘lass’, alternating it with her first name, ‘woman’, etc.
